We were quite excited on our flight to Australia. First because we expected much of it and second because we would meet up with our friend Sam, the Canadian who we had befriended in Nicaragua. As we arrived in Sydney s airport we called Sam and he told us that he would be gone for two days and that we could meet on the weekend. So we found a hostel in Kings Cross and began exploring Sydney on our own. Unluckily it rained during the first three days, but when we met Sam on the weekend it started getting better. Sam knew lots of people living in Sydney so we had a good time (what s up Chris). After a week we were itching to get out of Sydney to see more of Australia. We had booked a „Wickedcamper“, the cheapest camper you can rent. These campers are very basic and are painted from the outside. The guys working there are quite inventive. You see these campers all over Australia and they are all different from each other. The slogans they use are sometimes a little offensive, but hey what better way to come into contact with other people? Here are some slogans we saw on our way:
„Oral-Me; 90% of dentists prefer Oral-Me over dental floss“
„I like Barbie – that bitch got everything“
Our second camper got the slogan: „Don t drink and drive – smoke pot and fly“ and was painted with Cannabis leaves, evereyone wanted a picture of it, we should have charged them.
Anyways, Sam, Jana and I got in the camper, bought food and drinks and hit the road. I had bought a surfguide book called „wavefinder“, so I knew where to find all the good surf spots. On the way from Sydney to Brisbane we found some amazing national parks, always camped for free somewhere in the nature and even managed to get showers inside Caravan parks – you just have to walk inside like you own the place and nobody even thinks that you don t belong there. Australia is a paradise for campers, one finds public barbecue places and toilets everywhere and they are all clean. I got some nice waves on the way up, although I was kind of scared the first time I went in the water, because I was the only one and the sea was dark. Whene I got out Jana told me that she saw a group of dolphins passing near by me when I paddled out. If I would have seen them I think I would have shit my pants. The absolute highlight on our trip was Byron Bay, not because of the spot itself, but because of one weird incident:
The three of us went to a bar to have some beers and food one afternoon when all of the sudden an australian aproached Sam and asked him if he had seen some Canadians around. Sam looked up from his beer and couldn t trust his eyes. He had met this australian, called Duncan, and his wife a year before in Amsterdam on a pub crawl. They had lost each other later that night and even tried to find each other on the next day, but didn t suceed. Well, of course we had to celebrate their luck, got a couple of beers and Duncan and his wife Leanne invited us to have a typical australian barbecue in their place on the next night. It was awesome – thank you guys for everything we hope we can make up for it in the future. Duncan we still don t know how you made it to work on the next day. We dropped Sam of in Surfer s paradise. He stayed with a friend there and Jana and I headed to Wurtulla, a little townn on the Sunshine coast where we planned to visit Liam, an australian we made friends with during our dive course in Honduras. We stayed with Liam for an entire week, enjoying the luxury of a proper house and his Entourage-DVD s, the best TV show ever. I surfed everyday and found the best australian waves there. After a week we went to Brisbane, explored the city for a day, got into our camper and hit the road again, this time only the two of us..
