Honduras, Copan Ruins

Juli 21, 2008

Some time has passed since we updated our blog for the last time. We had a very good time so we did not want to spend so much time in internet. We are sorry. Actually we are not. Time is flying and we are already in Acapulco, Mexico and Bjoern has a nice mexican moustache, everyone thinks he is a local :) )). Well we try to remember what happened in the last 1.5 months:

We went to Copan in order to see the famous Mayan ruins there. We stayed in a nice restaurant/hostel owned by a belgian couple, who showed the eurocup games. By that time Germany had reached the final, so we were very excited to see a tough match against Spain. You all know the outcome. Apart from that we had a good time in the ruins, even though the park looked a little bit like a golf court, took a lot of pictures. One night after the occasional beer we decided to go out. Someone had told us of some local clubs, which played good music. On our way there we had to pass what seemed to be a car accident. All of the sudden a drunk driver came running towards us, trying to escape, followed by a cop dressed in military clothes who pointed his machine gun in his and therefore our direction. We stayed there a little paralyzed hoping that he wouldn t begin shooting. Well luckily for us he reached the drunk and beat him down with his gun in front of our eyes. We decided that this was a sign for us to return home, instead of partying. On the next day we wanted to go to Guatemala and asked around which bus we had to take. A Canadian who overheard our conversations offered us a ride and so we went with him. After a 2 hour ride in his luxurous car with air conditioning he dropped us off on a guatemaltecan highway where we had to take a public bus in order to reach our final destination „Rio Dulce“. The bus appeared after waiting 1.5 hours and offered us a 4 hour ride. It was packed with medium sized, moustache-rocking brown men (and women) and so the the adventure began…

Honduras, Utila Bay Islands

Juli 21, 2008

During our time in Bolivia we met an english chap who told us that the best and cheapest way to learn how to dive would be on the bay islands in Honduras. So it was out of question that we went there:

We arrived by ferry on Utila, the cheapest of the bay islands. After finding accomodation we directly searched for a dive school that could fulfill our needs. After talking to three or four different ones we decided to start on the next day in a school called Utila s dive center. After watching the Germany:Portugal game we started our classes in the late afternoon, still very excited and a little drunk. Our group consisted of about 10 guys and we directly fell in love with two australians who were the only ones to take classes easy and just wanted to have some fun. The rest of our group seemed to be a little tensed, didn t allow to copy during our exams and weren t that easy to talk to. It were the australians (Jon-o and Liam) who told us that our instructor Frank, looked and acted the same way like Starsky in „Starsky and Hutch“. Good fun. The classes consisted of 3 days of theory and 4 days of diving exams and 2 actual dives. Under water the australians and we tried hard to make each other laugh by flicking each others ears or doing funny dances, mainly because it is really hard to laugh with a regulator in your mouth being 18 meters under water. The diving was sensational. We saw some squids, all kind of fish and nice coral reefs. Now we are proud certificated open water divers, although we don t have the flashy, big watches our teachers have.

Utila is really like paradise, although it is mainly made for diving. It doesn t have nice beaches and after some while we wanted to get off the island, because you really get the cabin fever. So we spent a last night out with the aussis, laughed hard about Liam s tatoo (check the pic) and were on the ferry back to the mainland.
